Leading Change for a Stronger Community
Welcoming and Inclusive Communities for All Residents
York Region has one of the largest immigration populations in Canada. York Region has the third-largest recent immigrant population in Ontario.
As a result, immigration is an important part of York Region's growth. Our immigrant population is essential to the economic and cultural prosperity of York Region.
Newcomers help the region to compete globally and to grow as a vibrant community, but it can take up to 15 years for a newcomer to integrate — both economically and socially. By helping new Canadians integrate more quickly, the York Region Local Immigration Partnership initiative empowers all newcomers to succeed in our community and create a healthy community for all residents.

A "Made in York Region" Immigration Settlement Strategy
In February 2010, The Regional Municipality of York selected several community representatives to establish a Community Partnership Council (CPC).
York Region is collaborating with community members who represent a cross-section of community stakeholders including settlement services, labour market development, school boards, local municipalities, federal and provincial governments.
In collaboration with the CPC, the Region will be developing and implementing a "made-in-York Region" Immigration Settlement Strategy. York Region's Immigration Settlement Strategy helps newcomers integrate into their communities and meet the following objectives:
- Improve access to and coordination of immigrant integration services (settlement services, language training and labour market integration)
- Improve labour market outcomes for immigrants
- Strengthen regional awareness and capacity to successfully integrate immigrants
York Region is among 35 Local Immigration Partnerships across Ontario to implement this Strategy.
Through the Immigration Settlement Strategy, all residents have an opportunity to help guide how our communities develop and become welcoming and inclusive.
